Mar. 7th, 2006 @ 12:05 pm The problem with men...
This discussion prompt is either a bit early, or very late...

(Sorry it's been a while.)

Practice writing at various levels of detail by setting three distinct length goals (for instance, 50, 200, and 500 words), and writing the same story at each length.

Current Mood: curiouscurious
For this week I have in mind something like this. A list of 101, useful or not, facts about you. This is quite a popular online thing, so you may already have such a list. In which case, perhaps you could revisit, revise and re-release it.

Think about last year and pick one thing that you did, or that happened to you and then write five, one paragraph (or longer if you like) mini-stories about what didn't happen as a result--imagine what might have happened to five alternate universe yous.

Jan. 23rd, 2006 @ 08:55 am Perfume
Perfume is thousands of years old, although its precise origins are shrouded in mystery. The word perfume comes from the Latin per fume, “through smoke.” Aromatic gums, frankincense, and myrrh were gathered from trees and burned as incense during religious ceremonies. Later, richly scented plants were mixed with animal and vegetable oils to anoint the body. The earliest use of perfume bottles dates back to Egypt around 1000 B.C.

So. Perfume. What is your take on it? Do you love it? Hate it? Are you offended by it?

Today I shall attempt to seed you (oh, I say!) for a short (or long, if the mood takes you) story, with the word ambition and the quotation:

My only solution for the problem of habitual accidents . . . is to stay in bed all day. Even then there is always the chance that you will fall out.
    --Robert Benchley 1889-1945
Are you a risk taker? What risks have you taken in your life? Did they pay off? Is there any risk that you didn't take, but wished later that you had?

Jan. 4th, 2006 @ 05:25 pm Restitution Day
Use of a clever time travelling trick has ensured that this prompt is not late [cough]. It is Wednesday the 4th of January, and I am contemplating the past.

If you were offered the chance to go back to any one point of last year in order to do something that you meant to do, but never quite got round to: when would you to be tempted go to, and what would you be most tempted to do? Why? What difference do you think it might make to you now?

Dec. 7th, 2005 @ 11:18 am This Year
Since we are approaching the end of the year, I think this would be a good time to review it. So, how was your 2005? Did you do anything exciting? Do you have any regrets? Have you put anything off until 2006? What did you learn about yourself?

Nov. 30th, 2005 @ 02:30 pm Clothes
Tell us about your wardrobe. Not the article of furniture that you keep your clothes in--thought you may if it's and especially fine example of such--but the clothes themselves.

Do you feel that you own too many clothes? Not enough? Just enough? Are they a big part of your individuality, or do they function as a means to help you blend in? What's your favourite item of clothing? What do you think that everyone needs to have in their wardrobe? Is their anything you wouldn't wear, or anything you wish other people wouldn't wear? Are they any embarrassing articles lurking at the back of your closet? Are jeans essential? Where do you shop; what do you think about designer labels? Do you make your own clothes? What do you do with your clothes when you've finished with them?

Nov. 15th, 2005 @ 11:54 pm Seven Wonders
We've probably all heard of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, even if we can't named them all from memory, and we've probably all seen similar themed lists based on the same idea (Seven Wonders of the Modern World, Seven Natural Wonders, etc.). This week, your mission is to catalogue and set before the reading public your own Seven Wonders list. It can have any theme you choose, or no particular theme at all. Just list your wonders and write a paragraph or two about why you chose each of them.

This must be the week for the prompters to space out on their days. :) Sorry, I had two prompts in mind yesterday and wound up posting neither.

Here's one of them: Body language communicates a lot, unspoken. Experiment with writing body language as it were actual speech, as in my post here.

Nov. 4th, 2005 @ 04:12 pm Friday
My first NaNo book (2002) began with a first sentence and a last sentence, and I filled in the stuffing in between. Take one of the sentence pairs below and write a creative piece with the same rule (or make up your own! :)).

PAIR A
Start: He could have been forgiven for the broken china, if it had only come sooner.
End: In the end, she knew that the walls would never come clean again -- but it didn't matter.

PAIR B
Start: The church was a musty one, an old style single-room building that stood by itself in an otherwise barren plain.
End: "Well," she chortled, patting him on the back, "at least that's one less badger in the world."

PAIR C
Start: I can't remember the first time I met him very clearly, but I do know there was a chill in the air, and I could see my breath.
End: He turned and left me there, in the crossroads; as he faded towards the horizon, I said, beneath my breath, "Thank you, sir, and God bless."

PAIR D
Start: The thing about boomerangs is, you can't ever really throw one away, because it just keeps coming back.
End: "Gerald, my friend, that's the point, that's the entire point right there."

Oct. 21st, 2005 @ 11:29 am Friday Prompt
Write a letter to someone with whom you parted ways on bad terms long ago. Regret, reconciliation, rage, self-righteousness -- whatever emotion(s) seem to fit. (Halloween tie-in: Halloween, for both many Christians and many pagans, is a good time to let things go, so if you like your letter, consider printing it out and sending it/destroying it on 10/31.)

Oct. 14th, 2005 @ 12:50 pm *taps the microphone* This thing on? Check. Check. (I can't hear the cowbell!)
Hey, everybody, this is my first Friday prompt. Of course, I was fretting about making a good first impression, then I decided just to jump in and not worry. So, here goes...

=====

"There are 10 kinds of people in this world: Those who understand binary, and those who don't."

"My girlfriend wanted to argue about e and π, but I told her she was being irrational."

"What's super bouncy and writes overwrought French fiction? Gustave Flubber!"

Potential topic: Genre humor, and how it affects social interaction. Relatedly: How someone might react to these, especially if they don't get it.
